Last night, Democrat David Cohen was unanimously endorsed by the North Haven Democratic Town Committee (DTC) for North Haven Board of Selectmen in the town’s upcoming 2025 municipal election. Local Democratic party leaders came together and voted overwhelmingly, 65 to 0, in support of Cohen’s candidacy and for new ideas, new energy and a new direction to help move North Haven forward. With the DTC’s endorsement, Cohen is guaranteed a spot on the ballot as the party’s nominee.
In a rousing acceptance speech, Cohen accepted the DTC’s endorsement and vowed to bring Democrats and North Haveners of all political parties together around a shared vision of strengthening the town’s schools, investing in public safety, protecting and preserving North Haveners’ quality of life and growing the local economy.
“I am incredibly honored and grateful to receive the endorsement of the North Haven Democratic Town Committee, a group of committed individuals and local leaders who are deeply invested in our town and who care deeply about its future. Our party and our town are ready to move in a new direction – and we’re building a growing coalition of people who are ready to roll up their sleeves to strengthen our schools, to protect our quality of life, and to ensure that North Haven is an inclusive and thriving community to live, work and raise a family,”
said Cohen.
Cohen continued, “Our job in the coming weeks and months is to engage with our fellow residents from all political parties, to listen to their concerns and ideas, and to bring North Haveners together around a shared vision that will move our town forward. When we come together as a community, we can do anything that we put our mind to – we just have to get out there, engage with our fellow neighbors in good faith, and find that common ground that binds us together. Ignore the cheers, ignore the jeers and do the work.”
Cohen officially announced his campaign last month, challenging twelve year Democratic incumbent Sally Buemi for the seat. Enthusiasm for his candidacy has quickly grown, as evidenced by the DTC’s resounding endorsement over the incumbent. North Haven DTC member and North Haven Board of Education member Amanda Gabriele stated, “David is a breath of fresh air. David has unified and energized our party and I’m so excited to support, campaign and vote for someone with the vision, energy and ideas that our party and town so desperately need right now. I’m confident David will work to ensure that Democrats and voters of all stripes have a strong voice within their government that will represent their interests at town hall.”
Longtime North Haven resident Scott Leamon shared, “David is a public school parent, a volunteer firefighter and a small business owner who deeply understands and is deeply connected to the important issues and challenges facing North Haveners. He shares the experiences, concerns and aspirations that so many of us have for our families and our community – and, importantly, what we’re looking for our town government to deliver on. I’m excited for the fresh perspective and leadership that David will bring to the Board of Selectmen.”
Since his campaign began, Cohen has been going door-to-door and engaging with voters around town, launched a campaign website, released an introductory campaign video and continues to build grassroots support among North Haven residents. David Cohen is a North Haven volunteer firefighter, North Haven small business owner, and in-house counsel for a Connecticut-based Fortune 500 manufacturing company – and he and his wife Kim have two children who attend North Haven public schools.
